#foodwaste remains a major challenge across the EU, which ranks among the regions with the highest levels of food waste globally.

In particular, the Playfood partner countries, Greece, Portugal, and Belgium, report levels that exceed the EU average, highlighting the urgency of the issue.

These figures are concerning and call for collective action. Strengthening education, improving infrastructure, and engaging civil society are key steps toward meaningful change.

Through the Playfood initiative, we organize sessions focused on reducing food waste and empowering younger generations to lead the way toward a more sustainable future.

Another hands-on #foodwaste workshop just wrapped up, this time in #Greece 🇬🇷

The Galakeia School of Naoussa, in collaboration with the @eduquest.gr team, hosted an engaging session for its students.

Guided by an #agronomist, students explored the basics of #composting and its vital role in reducing food waste.
As a lasting takeaway, the school received a #composter, giving students the opportunity to put their learning into practice and build real-life food waste management skills.

The session brought conversations around household food waste, everyday habits, and how small changes can make a big impact. It also highlighted the crucial role of education in driving this transition.

Across EU countries, millions of tonnes of food are bought, consumed, and then thrown away every year.

Think hospitality and retail are the biggest sources of waste?

In reality, #households are responsible for the largest share, just over half of all food waste (54%). Retail accounts for about 7–8%, while restaurants and hospitality make up around 9–11%.

Fresh fruits & vegetables make the biggest amount of food being wasted, followed by bakery products.

Led by artist and expert Helena Loucao @criatividadeaolume alongside the RHEA team, @barbaraarita and @_raizarezende_ , participants explored practical ways to reduce food waste, discussed the current food waste situation and key figures in #Portugal, and discovered how creativity can transform everyday leftovers.

Together, the group prepared fermented foods such as kimchi to take home, tasted other fermented creations, and learned about their powerful benefits for gut health and overall well-being.

❄️We are slowly seeing the first signs of spring, but we are still very much in winter weather.

What should we eat during this period? How do we know what’s seasonal?

Depending, of course, on where you live and your climate, there are different crops available to enjoy.

🍊In Southern #Europe, where the climate is milder, citrus fruits are very dominant. They are perfect for snacks, desserts, or toppings, and are packed with vitamins and fibre.

🍎In Northern Europe, root #vegetables and apples are more prominent, making hearty and cosy dishes.
Cabbages, lettuces, parsnips, beets, and more can be turned into delicious soups and salads.

#Seasonal #food often contains more nutrients than food that is transported long distances or grown out of season in less natural conditions.

Buying #organic and seasonal produce can ensure even more nutrient-dense food, packed with health benefits, while also being better for the soil and the environment.

Co-Facilitated by Despoina Papadopoulou, a nutritionist, the group learned in a fun and interactive way about #healthy #food and its impact on our health.

There were activities for both #parents and students, and each group presented their results to the audience, making it an engaging evening of learning and fun.

On the 21st of November, we returned to @vividfarmsofficial in Portugal for our second community session, this time welcoming the kids to learn about the importance of growing their own food.

The session was facilitated by Ana Carvalho (Founder & Farmer, Vivid Farms), Rodrigo Borralho (Agroforestry & School-Garden Consultant), and @_raizarezende_ (Co-Founder, @rhea_eu).

This second edition brought together 40 children from the E.B Casevel School, participating across two sessions. The goal was to create hands-on learning experiences, beginning right in the #soil.

The day unfolded with:
🌾 Planting activities in the #greenhouse, where kids planted and cared for seedlings
🐄 Observing farm ecosystems, animals, and the biological processes that sustain food production
🌻 Learning directly from #nature
🤸 Play and exploration across the #farm
🥕 Tasting#fresh produce handpicked straight from the gardens.

By connecting children with the elements and concepts of soil, plants, and food systems, this session helped build long-term understanding of #sustainability and #health.

Families learned why it’s important to grow what we eat, and how to plant their own microgreens. At the end, they tasted nutritious snacks made with microgreens, giving them a great tool to do the same with their kids at home.

Led by @rhea_eu, this session is part of a series happening across all partner countries with participating schools, bringing the local community together to explore our four key themes and learn from their insights to support the development of the Playfood game.

The first Transnational Kick-Off Meeting took place in Kortrijk, Belgium, hosted by RHIZO Lyceum OLV Vlaanderen on 1st & 2nd of September. The event brought together nine participants from partner organisations and associated schools to officially launch the project and set the foundation for the next 18 months of collaboration and implementation.

The two-day meeting aimed to:

• Promote mutual learning and exchange of expertise
• Establish the Steering Committee
• Review planned activities, outputs, and milestones
• Define next steps, roles, and deadlines

🤝 The project brings together three organisations, @rhizorgkrachtschool (Belgium), @Eduquest (Greece), and @rhea_eu (Portugal) ,combining their expertise to create a European reference point for sustainable food education.

🎮 At its core, PLAYFOOD will develop a gamified digital platform that blends play with STEM-based learning, turning food sustainability into exciting, interactive experiences for kids.

The project explores four key themes:

2️⃣ Choosing local & seasonal foods
3️⃣ Understanding climate change & the circular economy
4️⃣ Growing your own food
