Thematic - Growing your own Food
The third discussion panel was implemented under the project’s thematic area “Growing Our Own Food” and focused on helping children understand where food comes from, how it is produced, and the importance of agriculture in everyday life. Through an interactive treasure hunt experience hosted at the American Farm School, participants were encouraged to explore the journey of food from production to consumption while engaging directly with farming environments and agricultural activities.
The event was designed as an experiential educational adventure that combined exploration, teamwork, problem-solving, and environmental education. Through a series of riddles, missions, and challenges, participants discovered different agricultural production units and learned about crops, livestock, food production processes, and sustainable farming practices.
Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening children’s connection with nature and food production systems. By interacting directly with agricultural facilities and observing various stages of food production, participants developed a better understanding of the effort, resources, and knowledge required to produce the food they consume daily.
The activity encouraged active participation and collaborative learning, as students worked together to solve clues and complete challenges throughout the treasure hunt. This gamified learning approach increased engagement and motivation while promoting curiosity, observation skills, teamwork, and critical thinking.
During the exploration, participants visited several production areas of the farm, including orchards, vineyards, vegetable gardens, greenhouses, animal farming facilities, and food processing units. Through these visits, they gained first-hand knowledge of agricultural production and the interconnected nature of food systems.
The treasure hunt concluded with the discovery of the final treasure, a symbolic gift that reinforced the educational message of the activity and encouraged children to continue exploring food production and cultivation practices at home or in school. The event provided a memorable and enjoyable learning experience while promoting the values of sustainability, responsible consumption, and appreciation for locally produced food.
